Iran pledges support for Syrian government approved by its people, says foreign minister
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has reaffirmed Tehran's position on Syria's future, stating that the Islamic Republic will support any government in Syria that has the approval of the Syrian people.
In an interview with Al Jazeera on January 31, Araghchi emphasized Iran's commitment to respecting the sovereignty of Syria and its political system, underscoring that Iran's support is contingent on the will of the Syrian populace, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
Araghchi also addressed the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly with regard to the Gaza Strip. Referring to the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas and Israel, he expressed Tehran's readiness to assist the Palestinians. "We congratulate the Palestinian Resistance on the victory and the return of the (Palestinian) prisoners. October 7 revived the cause of Palestine and this issue became the first issue in the region and the world," Araghchi said.
He also reflected on the situation in Syria, particularly following the challenges faced by Bashar al-Assad's government. Despite the evolving dynamics in Syria, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s ongoing support for the government in power as long as it has the backing of the Syrian people.
