Iranian FM: Over 3,100 dead in country's unrest

23 January 2026 18:24

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said the country has suffered extensive damage following what he described as a recent "terrorist operation," reporting widespread destruction of public infrastructure and significant loss of life.

According to Araghchi, the attacks resulted in damage to hundreds of facilities across the country, including ambulances, buses, gas stations, banks, government buildings, police stations, schools, mosques, libraries, churches, and transportation hubs, Caliber.Az reports.

Araghchi stated that the total death toll from the incidents stands at 3,117. He said 2,427 of those killed were civilians and members of the security forces, while 690 were identified as perpetrators of the attacks.

The remarks come amid tighter controls on domestic media coverage. Earlier, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council instructed newspaper editors and managers of online media outlets to refrain from publishing independent reports on protest-related deaths and to avoid conducting interviews with the families of those killed.
