Iran requests more time from Pakistan to review US conditions
Iranian officials have asked Pakistani mediators for additional time to study US proposals aimed at resolving tensions in the Persian Gulf region, a Pakistani source told Al Jazeera.
Enriched uranium currently held in Iran is the main obstacle in indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, the report added.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said late on Wednesday, May 20, that the Iranians have “received US views and are reviewing them”, according to the Iranian state agency Nour News.
Six weeks after the ceasefire came into force, diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting end to the conflict have intensified, with Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, set to visit Tehran on Thursday, May 21, for talks and consultations with Iranian officials, Iran’s ISNA news agency reports.
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Iran on May 20 for his second visit in less than a week, as discussions continue over Washington’s latest proposal, according to reports.
Islamabad hosted the only direct talks between US and Iranian officials since the conflict began on February 28, as part of ongoing mediation efforts to sustain the fragile ceasefire.
