Iran’s UN envoy condemns Western allegations amid arms supplies to Ukraine

05 September 2024 17:30

Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, remarked that during the UN Security Council session concerning Western arms supplies to Kyiv on August 30, the US, UK, and France once again coordinated their efforts to accuse Iran of involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Iravani pointed out the disingenuous nature of these allegations, given that these very nations are actively supplying weapons to Kyiv, Caliber.Az informs via Russian media.

“It is both ironic and hypocritical that three countries, directly involved in the Ukraine conflict and significantly contributing to its escalation by supplying advanced weaponry, are bold enough to make such baseless claims against Iran," he wrote in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

According to Iravani, Iran views the assertions of these three countries merely as a short-sighted policy aimed at protecting and advancing their own interests.

The US and its allies cannot deny that it is the supply of Western weapons and modern technology, particularly by US, that has prolonged the conflict in Ukraine and caused harm to the civilian population, Iravani pointed out.

"Contrary to the statement made by the US representative, it is the United States, not Iran, that is the primary supporter of terrorism both in the region and globally," the Iranian envoy emphasised.

Notably, on August 9 the Department of Defence (DoD) has announced additional security assistance to address Ukraine's critical security and defence needs. This marks the Biden Administration's sixty-third tranche of equipment to be supplied from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. The Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, with an estimated value of $125 million, will provide Ukraine with additional capabilities to meet its most urgent requirements, including air defence capabilities, multi-mission radars to detect and counter enemy artillery, and anti-tank weapons.

National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House John Kirby said on August 15 that Washington was planning to provide an additional military aid package to Ukraine "in coming weeks."
