Iranian FM’s visit to Beirut cancelled amid Lebanon-Israel framework deal
Iran has cancelled Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's planned visit to Beirut following the announcement of a framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
Araghchi had been scheduled to meet Lebanese President Joseph Aoun during the visit, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Lebanese media said Tehran viewed the trip as potentially legitimising Lebanon's position in negotiations with Israel or endorsing the framework agreement, which it considered unacceptable.
The reports added that if the visit had also been intended to address the appointment of Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, that issue has now been dropped from the agenda.
The original report also claimed that the cancellation had led to a rupture in diplomatic relations between Tehran and Beirut, though no official confirmation of such a development was cited.
Tehran reportedly views the US-backed framework agreement as an attempt to isolate Lebanon from the so-called "axis of resistance" and consolidate Israel's military gains in southern Lebanon.
The agreement links the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the complete disarmament of Hezbollah, a condition Iran and its regional allies reportedly regard as a concession to Israeli demands.
