Iranian parliament supports capital relocation plan
Iran's parliament has expressed support for the idea of moving the nation's capital from Tehran, acknowledging the significant effort and financial resources required for such a major undertaking.
Seyed Ruhollah Mousavi, a member of the Majlis Domestic Policy Committee, commented on the feasibility of the move stating that relocating the capital is a complex and labour-intensive process that will demand substantial funds, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
However, he noticed that with proper planning and preparation, it can be achieved.
He added that some ministries could be relocated to regions where specialized industries are concentrated, such as moving steel production facilities closer to the coast due to their high water consumption.
Plans for the capital's relocation were put forward by Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian. According to Pezeshkian, the new capital is intended to be situated in the south of the country, near the Persian Gulf. He cited both economic and logistical reasons for the move, explaining, "Tehran is facing problems that cannot be resolved without shifting the capital itself. Our current model of bringing resources from the south, processing them in Tehran, and sending them back for export is increasingly detrimental to our competitiveness."
Once a new location is selected, Pezeshkian announced that all government offices would transfer to the new capital, and residents of Tehran would be offered the chance to relocate as well.
