Iraq condemns Israeli airstrike on Iran, calls for international response
Iraq has voiced its strong condemnation of Israel's recent airstrike on Iranian territory, expressing concern over the international community's apparent indifference to Israel's actions in the region.
“Iraq condemns Israel's attack on Iran and warns of the dangerous consequences stemming from the global silence on this matter,” the Iraqi government stated in a formal statement, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The statement highlighted Israel's ongoing aggressive policies, which are perceived as attempts to escalate conflicts in the region, with Israeli forces acting without restraint from international authorities.
The Iraqi government reiterated its solidarity with Iran and called for a ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon. It emphasized the need for comprehensive regional and international efforts to restore and maintain stability in the Middle East.
Additionally, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed similar concerns, stating that it is "greatly troubled by the escalating situation in the Middle East, including the repercussions of Israel's recent strike on Iran."
The ministry condemned actions that could further exacerbate tensions and warned that the current unrest poses a significant risk of leading to a dangerous confrontation that threatens international peace and security. It underscored the necessity of adhering to international law and the UN Charter, which mandates respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also weighed in on the situation, urging Iran to refrain from retaliating against Israel. “Israel has the right to defend itself against Iranian aggression,” he said at a news conference. He called for all parties to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation, stressing that the UK is closely monitoring the fluid situation alongside its partners.
The Israeli airstrike on October 26 targeted multiple installations in Iran, including surface-to-air missile systems and air defence facilities, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The operation involved over 100 aircraft operating from a distance of 2,000 kilometres.
