Italian FM urges citizens to avoid Moscow amid security concerns

27 March 2024 19:52

Italy's Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, has issued a stark warning to Italian citizens, urging them to refrain from visiting Moscow amidst growing security concerns.

Speaking on Rai2  TV channel, Tajani emphasized the need for caution, particularly in light of the recent terrorist attack in the Russian capital.

Tajani revealed that approximately half a million Italians are planning to travel abroad over the Easter holidays, making it imperative for authorities to issue timely advisories. "We have always said that it is better to postpone trips to Moscow and especially if someone is already in Moscow, to avoid places with large crowds of people. We have been saying this since March 8," Tajani emphasized.

The cautionary advice follows previous warnings from the Italian Foreign Ministry regarding travel to Russia. On March 8, the ministry recommended postponing all trips to Russia and advised citizens to assess the necessity of their presence in the country. Tajani, in an earlier interview with Corriere della Sera newspaper, highlighted concerns over the risk of terrorist attacks, stating that such a danger "was in the air."

The urgency of Tajani's warning comes in the aftermath of a horrific terrorist attack at the Moscow Crocus City Hall concert hall on the evening of March 22. Armed individuals stormed the venue before a performance by the Picnic group, opening fire on the audience. The attack was followed by explosions and a subsequent fire, resulting in a tragic loss of life.
