Italy halts automatic extension of defence deal with Israel
Italy will not proceed with the automatic renewal of its defence agreement with Israel, given the current circumstances, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced, according to foreign media.
“The government, considering the situation we are experiencing, has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel,” Meloni said during a press briefing at the Vinitaly event in Verona.
Speaking on wider international developments, Meloni underlined the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing peace talks and reducing tensions, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which she described as essential not only for energy flows but also for fertiliser supply chains.
On energy strategy, she addressed calls to reconsider limits on Russian gas imports, arguing that economic pressure on Moscow remains a central instrument. “We must not forget that the economic pressure we have exerted on Russia in recent years is the most effective weapon we have to build peace,” she said, adding that she expects progress by early 2027.
Meloni also reacted to recent comments by US President Donald Trump regarding the pope, describing them as “unacceptable” and voicing support for Pope Leo. She added that she would not feel comfortable in a society where religious leaders are expected to follow political instructions.
On relations with the United States, Meloni reaffirmed Washington’s role as a strategic partner while stressing that allies must also be willing to express disagreements. “When you are friends and allies, particularly strategic ones, you must also have the courage to say when you disagree,” she said.
