Italy introduces reforms that provide PM position with significant additional powers Meloni: "Mother of all reforms"
04 November 2023 08:03
The Italian government has approved a constitutional reform proposal that would significantly enhance the powers of the prime minister, allowing them to be directly elected by the people for a five-year term instead of being nominated by the president.
As reported by the Italian ANSA, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni referred to this proposal as "the Mother of all reforms", aiming to ensure "stability" and have leaders chosen by the people.
Italy's prime minister has traditionally had a weak role due to the country's historical checks and balances, which were designed to prevent an accumulation of power in a single individual's hands, contributing to political instability with numerous governments over the years.
