The long-anticipated Middle East Peace Summit has officially opened in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump.
Leaders and senior representatives from more than 20 countries are attending the high-profile gathering. Among them are the president of Azerbaijan, the king of Jordan, the emir of Qatar, the prime minister of Kuwait, the king of Bahrain, the head of Palestine, as well as the presidents of Türkiye, Indonesia, France, and Cyprus, and the German chancellor. Also in attendance are the heads of government of Britain, Italy, Spain, Greece, Armenia, Hungary, Pakistan, Canada, Norway, and Iraq, along with the vice president of the United Arab Emirates.
The event also brings together key international and regional figures, including the UN Secretary-General, the head of the Arab League, the president of the European Council, Oman’s foreign minister, a representative of India’s Foreign Ministry, and Japan’s ambassador to Cairo.
The summit’s main goal is to establish lasting peace in the Gaza Strip, strengthen stability across the Middle East, and pave the way for a new era of regional security.
The meeting follows President Donald Trump’s recently unveiled 20-point “Peace Plan,” announced on September 29, which seeks to end ongoing hostilities and chart a sustainable resolution to the Gaza crisis.
Speaking a day before the summit at a graduation ceremony for police academy cadets, President al-Sisi expressed his gratitude to the US leader, saying, “I express my deep respect and gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his sincere desire to end the war during these talks.”
The Egyptian president also extended an invitation to Trump to visit Egypt for the potential signing ceremony of the Gaza peace agreement if the parties reach a final deal.
For his part, President Trump confirmed his readiness to attend such a ceremony, emphasising the scale and significance of the event. “This summit will bring together many leaders for the sake of signing a Gaza peace agreement. Rich countries will help rebuild Gaza. Peace will be enjoyed by the entire Middle East, not just Gaza,” Trump said at a White House press conference.
"It's a great deal for Israel, it's a great deal for the entire Arab world, Muslim world, and world, so we're very happy about it," he added.
The summit programme includes:
-
bilateral talks between the Presidents of Egypt and the United States ahead of the plenary session;
-
reception of arriving heads of state;
-
group photo of the participants;
-
signing ceremony of the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement;
-
keynote speeches by El-Sisi and Trump;
-
bilateral meetings of leaders on the sidelines of the forum.
International observers view the Sharm el-Sheikh summit as one of the most significant diplomatic initiatives of the year, which could become a turning point in the history of the Middle East peace process.
