Kazakh leader wishes success to Azerbaijani counterpart in hosting COP29
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has extended his best wishes to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the successful hosting of the global climate conference COP29 this autumn.
During his speech at the meeting of Central Asian heads of state and Azerbaijan in Astana, Tokayev emphasized the need for regional cooperation in ecology and combating climate change, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
"Our countries have great opportunities to expand mutually beneficial cooperation. Cooperation in the field of ecology and combating the effects of climate change is important. We face similar challenges, so increased interaction, coordination, and experience-sharing on the climate agenda are particularly important. Taking this opportunity, I wish President Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev success in holding the global climate conference COP29 this autumn," Tokayev stated.
He also reaffirmed Kazakhstan's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and expressed confidence that the decisions made at the meeting would further deepen the partnership rooted in centuries-old friendship and mutual support.
In November, Azerbaijan will host COP29, a decision finalized during the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is set to become the global focal point, expecting to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to mitigate human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), comprising 198 member countries, serves as the supreme body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. Unless agreed otherwise, COP meetings are held annually, with the inaugural event occurring in March 1995 in Berlin and the secretariat based in Bonn.
