Kremlin condemns actions leading to escalation in Middle East
On June 16, the Kremlin condemned actions that have led to the recent spike in tensions between Israel and Iran, warning of the dangers of further escalation in the Middle East.
“We condemn those actions which have provoked such a dangerous escalation of tensions,” Caliber.Az quotes Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying per Russian media.
His remarks come amid intensifying hostilities between Israel and Iran, with cross-border attacks raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.
Addressing the status of Russian citizens in the region, Peskov said that several Russians had already been evacuated from Iran via neighbouring Azerbaijan.
“Many Russians have been brought out of Iran through Azerbaijan, which allowed them to reach safe locations,” Peskov said.
However, he added that no high-level decision had yet been made regarding a full-scale evacuation from either Iran or Israel.
“To my knowledge, no decision has been made at the highest level regarding a complete evacuation [of Russian citizens] from Iran or Israel at this time,” he said.
“Naturally, all the relevant Russian agencies are closely monitoring the situation.”
The Russian government has not issued a public advisory for its citizens in the conflict zones, but officials say contingency plans remain under review depending on how the situation develops.
