Kremlin defends Russia’s digital restrictions, cites security needs
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has commented on restrictions affecting internet access, the blocking of VPN services, and limitations on foreign messaging platforms.
According to Peskov, foreign companies are required to comply with Russian legislation, and failure to do so compels Moscow to impose restrictive measures, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“This is a completely normal practice that works in many countries, and such steps are met with understanding,” the Kremlin representative said.
Peskov stressed that measures limiting digital services do not represent “a path to the past.” “We are currently in a situation where security considerations dictate the need to take certain measures,” he stated.
The spokesperson also assured that internet services in Russia will return to normal once the necessity for such restrictions no longer exists. He added that most Russians understand the rationale behind these measures. “These measures are being taken, and, of course, the majority of our citizens understand their appropriateness and necessity,” Peskov said.
