Kyiv sees signs of escalation as Russia plans massive troop expansion
The Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has stated that Russia intends to recruit approximately 409,000 additional troops in 2026, signaling Moscow remains committed to continuing its military campaign against Ukraine.
According to Syrskyi, Ukrainian forces have observed a rise in Russian activity along the front line as weather conditions improve, a seasonal shift that typically enables intensified operations.
He also disclosed details of a high-level operational meeting focused on the condition of defensive engineering works. Key priorities identified during the session included strengthening fortifications, enhancing counter-drone protection systems, and preparing civilian settlements for potential defensive roles.
During the meeting, Syrskyi reviewed reports from field commanders, officials from the State Special Transport Service, and regional military administration leaders. He noted that several critical issues were identified, with concrete solutions and implementation timelines already established.
Emphasizing the urgency of these efforts, Syrskyi stressed that both the quality and speed of fortification work are crucial—not only for maintaining defensive stability but also for safeguarding the lives of Ukrainian service members.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to military personnel, engineers, and local authorities involved in reinforcing defensive positions, underscoring that the broader struggle remains ongoing.
