Lithuania to build counter-mobility zones along borders with Russia, Belarus
Lithuania plans to construct counter-mobility strips designed to hinder the advance of enemy forces into the country by the end of 2029, along its borders with Russia’s Kaliningrad region and Belarus, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence announced, per Caliber.Az.
“By the end of 2029, new barrier systems—counter-mobility zones—are planned along the borders with Belarus and Russia,” the statement said.
These zones will extend 150 meters inland from patrol tracks. The project includes engineering structures to block approaches to border posts, close roads coming from Belarus, and anti-tank ditches. In the Šakiai and Vilkaviškis districts bordering Kaliningrad, the Ministry of Defence intends to restore drainage ditches and rehabilitate previously drained wetlands and marshy areas.
In 2026, €10 million will be allocated for these measures. The total cost is expected to reach €50 million, funded through the state defence budget.
