Media: Romanian president weighs participation in Board of Peace meeting
Romanian President Nicușor Dan is still considering whether to attend the first meeting of the U.S.-led Board of Peace, scheduled to take place in Washington on February 19, according to sources in the Presidential Administration cited by Digi24.
The sources said the president is inclined not to participate, as the format of the meeting could place countries that have not formally decided to join the initiative in a secondary role, effectively keeping them on the sidelines.
Speaking ahead of an informal European Council summit, Dan confirmed that Romania remains in discussions with the United States regarding potential accession to the Board of Peace. He indicated that a decision on participation would depend on the outcome of talks with the American side and was likely to be made within the week.
Asked whether Romania would refrain from attending if its role were limited to observer status, Dan said the matter depended on the conditions of participation. He noted that developments in Gaza are important for Europe and emphasised that Romania traditionally maintains relations with both Israel and Arab countries in the region, making involvement significant for Bucharest.
However, he stressed that the final decision would hinge on the specific terms of engagement.
The president added that he would also consult with European partners on the issue, though the final decision would be made by Romania.
The Board of Peace, a U.S.-led international initiative, was launched at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos. Initially conceived to support ceasefire, reconstruction, governance and stabilisation efforts in the Gaza Strip under Trump’s peace plan, it has since been described as expanding its scope to address broader global conflict issues beyond Gaza.
