Moldovan portal covers Aliyev’s interview on peace with Armenia
A popular Moldovan news portal, Noi.md, published an article covering President Ilham Aliyev’s interview with France 24 during the Munich Security Conference, highlighting his views on achieving peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Aliyev noted that the signing of the historic document by Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders at the White House, in the presence of the US president, marked the end of the conflict and the beginning of a peaceful period, Caliber.Az reports.
More than six months have passed since then, and the border with Armenia remains calm. Azerbaijan has already unilaterally lifted restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia and has begun supplying essential petroleum products to the country.
The article also cited Aliyev saying that certain formalities must be completed before the final peace treaty can be signed. Changes to the Armenian constitution are required to remove provisions concerning territorial claims to the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Aliyev emphasised that the official peace treaty should be distinguished from normalisation, which is already underway, as all positive developments indicate.
However, the article noted that Armenia’s long-standing Declaration of Independence, adopted during the Karabakh occupation, contains a clause claiming parts of Azerbaijani territory, which must be amended.
“And as far as I know, Armenia is planning to hold a referendum. And as soon as it is done, there will be no obstacles to the formal signing of a peace agreement,” Aliyev stated.
