Moscow equips Su-57 jet with AI system acting as second pilot
An artificial intelligence (AI) system has been integrated into Russia’s Su-57, a single-seat multirole fighter jet, effectively serving as a second pilot, a representative of Rosoboronexport announced.
The AI system, which is also intended for export, is designed to assist pilots during both routine flights and combat operations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The Rosoboronexport representative explained that the AI will offer tactical guidance during missions.
A source within the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the developer of the Su-57, told the agency that the system handles part of the workload during standard flight operations, including navigation along route points and management of flight systems.
However, the source emphasised that the final decision on the use of weapons remains solely with the human pilot.
It should be noted that the Su-57 is Russia's most advanced fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, developed by Sukhoi under the United Aircraft Corporation. Designed to perform both air superiority and ground attack missions, it is meant to rival Western platforms such as the US F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
The aircraft features a stealth-optimised design, supercruise capability, and exceptional manoeuvrability thanks to thrust-vectoring engines.
