Moscow views Armenian coup prevention as internal matter, calls for calm
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement about preventing an attempted coup in the country is an internal matter of Yerevan, Russian President’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has said.
“This is, of course, an internal matter of Armenia. We are certainly interested in Armenia maintaining law and order, calm, and being a prosperous, stable country friendly to Russia,” Peskov replied, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
To recall, earlier today, June 25, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared a Facebook post, announcing that criminal-oligarchic-clerical circles attempted to plot a coup. However, their plan didn’t work out as law enforcement forces thwarted the attempt.
The prime minister’s statement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Armenia, where opposition groups and some elements within the influential church have criticised his government’s policies, particularly regarding relations with Russia and normalisation efforts with neighbouring Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
