Parliament speaker condemns "alarming trend" of EU attacks on Georgia
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has accused Brussels of engaging in an increasingly frequent pattern of politically motivated attacks against Georgia — actions he says are at odds with the European Union’s declared principles.
Papuashvili issued the remarks in response to comments made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
On June 23, Kallas announced that the European Union is prepared to consider further restrictive measures targeting individuals “responsible for repression” in Georgia.
Reacting to the EU's statements, Papuashvili wrote on his social media platform: “Yesterday, we witnessed a series of attacks on the Georgian state from Brussels, which, unfortunately, has become an alarming trend recently.”
The parliamentary speaker further claimed that these criticisms are particularly troubling in light of allegations that EU funds — as well as funds from individual member states — have been used to support harmful activities within Georgia.
According to Papuashvili, such funding contributes to “propaganda and disinformation, hate campaigns, the undermining of democratic institutions, politically motivated persecution and extremism.”
“Instead of answering these legitimate and fact-based questions,” he added, “the Georgian people are subjected to politically motivated attacks, which contradicts the stated values of the European Union.”
