MP sees Erdogan victory as triumph for Azerbaijan, Turkic world

29 May 2023 14:15

Türkiye's victory today is not just its own, but also the victory of Azerbaijan and the entire Turkic world. The people of Azerbaijan, like the people of Türkiye , had been anticipating this win.

Azerbaijani MP Jeyhun Mammadov made the remarks in an interview with Report.

According to him, democracy has taken over on the fraternal side.

"The imperialists, Iran, Armenia and their patrons tried their best to prevent this process, but they failed. Attempts by those who want to turn Türkiye into Syria or Iraq have proved futile. Today, the Turkish people have said 'no' to the activities of [opposition candidate Kemal] Kilicdaroglu, which are far from values," the MP said.

He stressed that President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan believed in this victory.

"We knew that the people of Türkiye would make the right decision," he said.

The member of the Milli Majlis also pointed out that a new stage is beginning in Azerbaijani-Turkish ties from now on.

"We will continue to strengthen our relations, friendship and brotherhood. As a result of the efforts of the two leaders - Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijan and the Turkic world will consolidate their victory, and our relations will be further developed. Today, every Azerbaijani is happy about this victory and success. Today, everyone in Baku celebrates this victory as the victory of the Azerbaijani people. Long live the Turkish-Azerbaijani friendship! Congratulations to fraternal Türkiye on the right choice and decision!" Mammadov said.

According to unofficial results, the Turkish incumbent won the race with 52.14 per cent, while Kilicdaroglu got 47.86 per cent of the vote, he said. He added that 99.43 per cent of the ballot boxes have been opened so far.

In the first round of the election on May 14, no candidate got the 50 per cent needed for an outright victory, triggering the presidential runoff, though Erdogan took the lead with 49.52 per cent. Parliamentary elections were also held that day, with Erdogan's electoral alliance winning a majority of seats.
