Azerbaijan to UN: No peace without justice and accountability
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada has emphasized that genuine peace and reconciliation can only be achieved through truth-telling and addressing past injustices, warning against impunity.
Commenting on the recent statement by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, Hajizada wrote on X that appreciating efforts for peace should not obscure the full picture, Caliber.Az reports.
He underscored the importance of accountability for those charged or convicted of war crimes, ethnic cleansing, military aggression, torture, and other serious offenses.
“The pursuit of justice demands accountability for all who are either have been charged or convicted of war crimes, ethnic cleansing, military aggression, torture, and other serious offenses. A fair trial, adhering to international legal standards, is essential to establish the truth, deliver justice to victims, and uphold the rule of law. Only through truth-telling and healing the wounds, peace and reconciliation will prevail over impunity,” Hajizada stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions on post-conflict justice and reconciliation in the South Caucasus, where Azerbaijan has repeatedly called for holding perpetrators of crimes accountable under international law.
