Over 15 million tonnes of cargo turnover expected via Horadiz-Aghband railway in Karabakh

More than 15 million tonnes of cargo is expected to be carried along the Horadiz-Aghband railway annually.

The statement came from the head of the Construction Control Department of Azerbaijan Railways, Tural Abbasli, Report informs.

"If you remember from the Soviet times, the volume of transportation under the project was planned at 15 million tonnes. But the capacity of our current project is wider, we are planning to transport more than 15 million tonnes of cargo annually. This will be possible after the opening of the Zangazur corridor," Abbasli said.

According to him, trains running on diesel will run along the line, and in the future, it is planned to electrify the railway line.

The design and construction of the Horadiz-Aghband railway were carried out in line with the decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated March 13, 2021. The project implies 9 stations (Horadiz, Marjanli, Mahmudlu, Soltanli, Humlak, Hakari, Minjivan, Bartaz and Aghband), construction of 469 engineering structures (41 bridges, 3 tunnels, 22 road crossings, 2 galleries, 4 animal crossings, 253 culverts and 144 reserve crossings), 70 switches, 110.4 km of signalling and communication systems.

All construction and installation efforts are carried out in three phases. The Horadiz-Aghband railway lines cross the Hakari River over which the longest railway bridge in Azerbaijan with 13 spans and a length of 418 metres is under construction.
