Pentagon seeks over $200 billion in additional funding for Iran conflict
The Pentagon has requested more than $200 billion from Congress to support military operations in Iran, according to a senior administration official
The source indicated that significant new demand will probably encounter pushback from lawmakers opposed to the conflict, The Washington Post (WP) reports.
According to three other people familiar with the matter, who confirmed that the Defence Department is requesting funding of that scale, the amount would greatly exceed the costs of the administration’s extensive airstrike campaign so far and is intended to rapidly boost production of critical munitions, as US and Israeli forces have targeted thousands of sites over the past three weeks
It remains uncertain how much the White House will ultimately request from Congress. The funding request is set to trigger a major political battle in Congress, with public support for the effort lukewarm and Democrats voicing sharp criticism.
