Peskov disagrees with Trump’s remarks on USSR’s role in World War II
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has expressed disagreement with comments made by US President Donald Trump regarding the role of the Soviet Union in World War II.
In a conversation with journalists, Peskov responded to Trump's statement that Russia "helped the United States" win the war, while also acknowledging the geographical distance between the two countries and the separate theaters of war, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"With all due respect, this is a topic on which it is probably possible to disagree with Mr. President," Peskov said.
He noted that while President Trump has previously remarked on the ocean that separates America from Europe, the war and its devastation primarily took place on another continent, where the Soviet Union bore the brunt of the fighting and its tremendous human losses.
“We will never forget the US help in WWII. We hope that the USA and President Trump will share in the joy of the 80th anniversary of the Victory,” Peskov said, referencing the upcoming anniversary of the end of the war.
Peskov's comments followed Trump’s assertion that Russia played a crucial part in the Allied victory, referencing the immense sacrifices made by the Soviet Union, which lost tens of millions of people during the conflict.
