Political analyst: Armenia has lost its subjectivity on world arena

26 July 2022 11:26

Farhad Mammadov, the Azerbaijani political analyst and director of the South Caucasus Research Center, pointed out Armenia's lack of subjectivity on his Telegram channel.

"The last two weeks have been a landmark in the last more than a year and a half since the end of the war. Yerevan's decision to withdraw its Armed Forces from Karabakh is practically not discussed in Armenia and this has its reasons.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's rebuke of the RPC (Russian Peacekeeping Contingent) was followed by a meeting at the level of foreign ministers in Tbilisi and Armenia's decision to withdraw its forces from Karabakh was announced. Azerbaijan addressed its expectations to the Russian side, and the decision was made by the Armenian government. The pro-Russian parliamentary opposition did not make a sound or accuse Pashinyan of treason; the extra-parliamentary pro-Western opposition has a similar position.

That is, there is a consensus between the West and Russia on this issue, which allows Pashinyan to take such actions. Please note, not his legitimacy, but the coincidence of the position of this country's main sponsors.

I confess that I was sure that it was Armenia's increased subjectivity and Pashinyan's increased legitimacy that should create the conditions for progress in normalization. However, the practice has shown that solutions are achieved through pressure and agreements with Armenia's sponsors rather than with Armenia itself. This is an indicator of this country's lack of subjectivity. As before, those countries that want to influence Azerbaijan do it through Armenia.

However, the internal consolidation of Azerbaijani society, the legitimacy of President Ilham Aliyev, and the ability to focus the interests of the main external actors in the region allow Azerbaijan to promote its own agenda in the process of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

Today even Iran is using Armenia's interests for its own purposes. Iran demonstrates that it defends Armenia (its interests) without Armenia... Pashinyan and his entourage are not making statements in support of Iran, and this shows that the Armenian leadership understands that they have little say in this process. As a result, decisions in the region are made at the expense of Armenia's weakening negotiating positions.

I think that this trend will continue and progress in the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations will be achieved through negotiations with Armenia's sponsors," Mammadov wrote.
