Pomeranian becomes Japan’s first police dog of its kind
In a first for Japan, a Pomeranian has been officially recruited as a police dog. Four-year-old Haku outperformed 51 competitors in qualification tests, including German Shepherds and other large service breeds, according to Miyanichi.
The fluffy “new recruit” will focus on searching for missing persons and assisting in tracking suspects. Police believe his friendly appearance will be an advantage, as he is less likely to intimidate people in urban environments.
Haku has already begun patrol duties in Chiba Prefecture. Thanks to his small size and keen sense of smell, he performs effectively in densely populated areas and parks, where larger dogs may struggle.
Law enforcement officials hope Haku’s example will encourage the use of other small breeds that have traditionally not been taken seriously for police work.
