Putin ratifies major strategic partnership agreement with Iran by strengthening bilateral ties

21 April 2025 18:34

Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially signed a law ratifying the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Iran, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations between the two countries.

The law was published on April 21 and signifies the formal approval of the agreement, which was initially signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025, Caliber.Az reports, citing the website of the Russian government's official legal acts.

The document outlines the ratification of the agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran, signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025. This landmark agreement sets the framework for enhanced cooperation between Russia and Iran across several vital sectors, including politics, trade, economy, energy, transportation, investment, infrastructure, security, and defence.

The comprehensive nature of the partnership aims to solidify ties in areas critical to both nations. In addition to these key sectors, the agreement also promotes collaboration in emerging fields such as information technology, education, culture, sports, and healthcare. Both countries have expressed interest in joint ventures in these areas, reflecting a broadening of their bilateral relations to cover diverse fields that benefit both sides.

Russia and Iran have maintained close cooperation for a long time, albeit unofficially, but their alliance has become more apparent in recent years. Iran is one of the countries actively supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine, providing military assistance. In 2022, Iran provided Russia with kamikaze drones, which have been used by Russian forces to target Ukrainian civilians. Russia has also received short-range ballistic missiles from Iran.
