Qatar deepens role in Syria with new security training programme
Qatar has initiated a training programme for Syrian security personnel, signalling a deeper role in regional efforts to stabilise Syria.
Small groups of Syrian security officers have arrived in Qatar to undergo training aimed at preparing them to function as law enforcement units tasked with maintaining public order inside Syria, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
The initiative, conducted on Qatari territory, is designed to build capacity within Syria’s internal security structure amid the country’s ongoing reconstruction efforts. Beyond training, Qatar is also providing direct financial assistance to Syrian civil servants. The Gulf state has introduced monthly grants of $30 to public sector employees, offering a modest but symbolic lifeline to a bureaucracy facing chronic underfunding.
These efforts form part of Qatar’s broader regional engagement, aligning with similar initiatives by Türkiye and Saudi Arabia aimed at stabilizing Syria without reigniting broader conflict. In a further demonstration of financial support, Qatar and Saudi Arabia recently collaborated to repay a $15 million debt Syria owed to the World Bank — a move interpreted as part of a coordinated strategy to reintegrate Syria into regional economic frameworks.
