Qatar says Iran-Israel ceasefire paves way for Gaza peace, cites Trump’s key role
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari has said that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel creates “momentum” for new talks on peace in the Gaza Strip.
In an interview with CNN, Al Ansari said Qatar had been in contact with “all sides” over the past couple of days to “convince (Israel and Hamas) to get into talks again,” Caliber.Az informs.
“This is the time now for President Trump to push for it and we believe he is sincere about it…We are willing to help on that,” Al Ansari said.
“There was momentum created by the ceasefire in Iran and Israel, but we’re not out of the woods yet. There are a lot of details that I can’t discuss right now about the deal in place but I can tell you it’s the same parameters that keeps going in and out of the talks,” he said.
Al Ansari also calls the Iranian missile strikes on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar a "scar on the relationship" between his country and Tehran.
The recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel, announced on June 23, marks a significant diplomatic development in the Middle East, with Qatar playing a pivotal role as a mediator.
The Iran-Israel ceasefire was brokered through intense diplomatic efforts involving U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Qatari leadership, notably Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Following Iran’s retaliatory missile strike on Al Udeid on June 23, 2025, in response to U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Qatar swiftly engaged with Iranian officials to secure Tehran’s agreement to a U.S.-proposed ceasefire. Trump’s direct communication with the Qatari Emir and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facilitated the deal, which aimed to end a 12-day conflict that saw significant casualties and regional instability.
The ceasefire has created an opportunity to refocus on the Gaza conflict, where Qatar has been a key mediator alongside Egypt in negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
