Romanian PM seeks new alliances after coalition breakdown
Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has ruled out resigning despite a deepening political crisis, announcing plans to seek the formation of a minority government after losing key coalition support.
The crisis was triggered after the Social Democratic Party of Romania (PSD) withdrew its backing for Bolojan’s candidacy, undermining the stability of the ruling coalition. In response, the prime minister said he would initiate negotiations with political factions in an effort to secure parliamentary support for a new governing arrangement.
Speaking after meetings with party leaders, Bolojan, who represents the National Liberal Party (PNL), made clear that he intends to remain in office and work to preserve the current cabinet without the participation of the Social Democrats.
Bolojan said a resolution had been adopted reaffirming both his mandate and that of the PNL leadership to maintain government stability during the crisis.
“A resolution was adopted confirming what I stated last night: the mandate of the PNL leadership and for me, as prime minister, is to ensure government stability in a crisis caused by the irresponsibility of the PSD, and to secure a parliamentary majority to support the government,” he said.
He added that negotiations with political factions supporting the current administration would begin in the coming days to determine the possible composition of a minority government.
