Russia demands respect for Yemen's sovereignty
Russia has called on the Houthi movement, known as Ansar Allah, to cease obstructing maritime freedom, while also demanding that all international actors respect Yemen's sovereignty.
Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, made these statements at a UN Security Council meeting focused on the situation in Yemen, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He urged the Houthis to stop any actions hindering international shipping and to release the Galaxy Leader vessel and its crew.
At the same time, Polyanskiy criticized aggressive actions against targets in Yemen, such as those by the so-called Western coalition from the Red Sea, describing them as severe violations of international law, including the UN Charter.
He warned that such actions could escalate tensions with unpredictable consequences.
Polyanskiy also noted that Houthi actions reflect regional frustration with Israeli policies, specifically those related to Gaza. He argued that the UN Security Council's inaction only fuels the sentiments of the Arab street, which supports the Houthis' principled stance.
