Russia jams GPS signal from satellites in Earth orbit
Russia is undermining the operation of satellites in Earth orbit in order to muffle the work of the GPS signal.
This was stated by the heads of the space forces of Western countries, RBC-Ukraine reports with reference to The Times.
General Jamie Dickinson, chief of the US Space Command, said in a commentary to the publication that Russia is focusing its efforts on outages of satellites and jamming of the GPS signal. The main goal of such actions of the aggressor country is to prevent the control of drones and the determination of coordinates for artillery strikes for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Dickinson said the US military has evidence that Russia is using the technology to disrupt satellite signals, thereby exposing them to severe disruption.
“Significant failures in GPS signals were noticed by American intelligence when the Russians used their equipment near Chernihiv,” said the head of the US Space Command.
The information that the Russian Federation interferes with the normal operation of satellites that distribute the GPS signal is also confirmed by other countries. So the Finnish authorities reported that Russians are carrying out similar aggressive actions near its borders. In March, Finnish aircraft flying near the Kaliningrad region and the eastern border of Finland noticed interference with their GPS tracking devices.
This intervention came immediately after Finnish President Sauli Niinistö met with US President Joe Biden regarding the country's soon-to-be NATO accession.
