Russia regains eligibility to host major aquatics events
Russia has regained the right to host World and European aquatics championships, according to statements from national sports officials.
Dmitry Mazepin, head of the Russian Aquatics Federation, confirmed the development following a decision by World Aquatics, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“We thank World Aquatics for granting us full membership status. Starting today, we will compete under our flag and with our national anthem,” Mazepin said.
The move marks a significant shift after a period of restrictions that had limited Russian athletes’ participation in international competitions under national symbols.
Mazepin also indicated that Russia is preparing to host major international aquatics events in the near future. He noted that preliminary discussions have taken place with World Aquatics regarding potential competitions.
However, he acknowledged that the number of venues in Russia capable of hosting events at the level of World Championships remains limited.
