Russia’s choice of Istanbul signals strong Ankara ties, says Turkish FM
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has praised Russia’s decision to select Istanbul as the venue for direct negotiations with Ukraine, interpreting the choice as a testament to Moscow’s regard for its bilateral ties with Ankara.
Speaking during discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Fidan highlighted the diplomatic significance of hosting the talks in Istanbul, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“Russia’s selection of Istanbul as a platform for direct negotiations with Ukraine allows us to affirm that Moscow places considerable importance on its relationship with Türkiye,” he stated.
Fidan announced that Türkiye is prepared to host a new round of peace negotiations regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed Moscow’s deep appreciation for Türkiye’s pivotal role in facilitating direct dialogue between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Speaking at a meeting with Fidan, Lavrov emphasized Russia’s gratitude for Türkiye’s sustained efforts in organising these crucial negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
