First-ever Atomic Summit set to take place in Moscow on September 25
The “Atomic Summit” will take place for the first time in human history on September 25 in Moscow, Director General of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) Alexey Likhachev told journalists.
“The president has given full approval. On the 25th [of September in Moscow], the first-ever atomic summit in human history will take place,” he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The summit is reportedly integrated into the World Atomic Week, which will include high-level consultations, with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expected to attend, signalling its international prominence.
The summit occurs against the backdrop of Russia’s strained relations with the West due to its war in Ukraine. Western sanctions have targeted Rosatom’s leadership, including Likhachev, for involvement in Russia’s nuclear weapons complex and the occupation of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Despite this, Rosatom has avoided comprehensive sanctions, maintaining its global influence, particularly in developing countries.
