Russian border guards quit Yerevan's Zvartnots airport after 32 years
Russian border guards have officially withdrawn from Yerevan's Zvartnots airport, ending a 32-year presence.
This withdrawal is part of a broader shift in Armenia's control over its borders, a relationship that has been in place since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
For over three decades, Russian forces have been responsible for securing Armenia's borders, including at key points like Zvartnots Airport. The handover of control was formalized in a protocol signed by Roman Golubitskiy, head of the Russian Federal Security Service's border guard department in Armenia, and Edgar Unanyan, commander of the border troops of Armenia's National Security Service.
"The task has been fulfilled honorably; the security of the Republic of Armenia at the air checkpoint has been ensured," Golubitskiy stated.
