Russian FM hails Alaska summit as step toward long-term Ukraine solution
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described the recent summit in Anchorage as useful and productive, praising the positive atmosphere of the discussions.
Lavrov said that US President Donald Trump and his team demonstrated a genuine commitment to achieving progress on the Ukrainian settlement, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“There was a good atmosphere at the summit in Alaska, as reflected in the statements made by Presidents Putin and Trump following the talks. It was undoubtedly a useful conversation. It was clear that the President of the United States and his team sincerely want to achieve a result that will be long-term, sustainable, and reliable,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov has denied that Moscow aimed to capture territories in Crimea or Donbas.
He said neither region nor Novorossiya “were ever our objective.” He stressed Russia’s focus was on protecting ethnic Russians living there and acknowledged their historical contributions, including building cities, ports, factories, and shedding blood in the regions.
The Anchorage summit, held in Alaska on August 15, 2025, brought together US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with senior officials from both countries, to discuss key international issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The high-level talks aimed to reduce tensions and explore avenues for a sustainable settlement, while also addressing broader security and diplomatic concerns between Washington and Moscow.
While no formal agreements were announced, the summit was widely regarded as a step toward improved communication and coordination on security matters.
