Russia's Lavrov highlights Türkiye's potential role in strengthening BRICS
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Türkiye has the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of BRICS, with its level of involvement to be determined through mutual agreement.
In an interview with a Turkish newspaper, Lavrov expressed enthusiasm for Türkiye’s interest in aligning more closely with BRICS, emphasizing the group's appeal due to its principles of respect for the UN Charter, openness, pragmatism, and non-directiveness regarding third parties, Caliber.Az reports.
He highlighted the consensus reached at the recent Kazan summit, which favoured strengthening ties among current BRICS members while inviting partner countries to join. “I am confident that Türkiye can make a significant contribution to the further development of BRICS. The parameters of Türkiye's participation will be decided based on consensus, respecting the sovereign choices of all BRICS countries and Türkiye itself,” he remarked.
In addition to discussing BRICS, Lavrov addressed the ongoing dialogue between Türkiye and Syria, noting Russia's intention to actively facilitate this process. He pointed out that past differences between Damascus and Ankara had stalled negotiations. “The Syrian government insists that the withdrawal of the Turkish military from Syrian territory must be prioritized. Türkiye, while reaffirming its commitment to Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, suggests that the timing of its military withdrawal can be addressed later. Given the signals of serious interest from both capitals, we are ready to assist in reviving the negotiation process as soon as possible,” he stated.
Lavrov underscored the importance of normalizing relations between Syria and Türkiye for stabilizing the region and enhancing security in the Middle East. He highlighted key areas of concern, including the return of Syrian refugees, combating terrorism, and ensuring border security, as essential topics for ongoing discussions.
Additionally, Lavrov called for an end to violence in the Middle East and the establishment of conditions conducive to political resolution, asserting that no party can emerge victorious from armed conflict. He urged all involved to avoid escalating tensions, emphasizing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through a political solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on universally recognized international legal standards. This includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
Lavrov reiterated that the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict has triggered a new wave of violence, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians in Gaza and thousands more in Lebanon, while drawing more nations into the conflict.
