Russian FM: No hope for better relations with Germany
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said that bilateral relations between Moscow and Berlin have been virtually destroyed.
"In light of numerous belligerent and Russophobic statements by German politicians, there is no reason to expect an improvement in relations between our countries," Zakharova stated, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
According to the diplomat, the process of deteriorating Russian-German relations began under Olaf Scholz, who has since resigned as Chancellor of Germany.
Zakharova is convinced that the new German government will only worsen the situation.
Notably, Germany has recently formed a new government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), following the February 2025 federal elections. Merz's CDU/CSU alliance secured 28.5% of the vote, forming a coalition with the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Merz was officially appointed Chancellor after a second round of parliamentary voting, having initially fallen short by six votes—a first in postwar German history. His administration faces significant challenges, including economic stagnation, strained transatlantic relations, and the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which achieved its best-ever electoral result.
Internationally, Merz has prioritised mending foreign relations, especially with neighboring European nations, and reaffirming support for Ukraine. His early diplomatic efforts include visits to France and Poland to strengthen European unity.
