Russian leader calls NATO anachronism
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that NATO is the last remaining military alliance in the world, and its existence is an "anachronism".
President Putin made these remarks during a session of the Valdai Discussion Club, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The topic of the meeting was "A Lasting Peace—On What Basis? Global Security and Equal Opportunities for Development in the 21st Century."
Putin described NATO as an organisation "held together" by rigid ideology, dogma, and obligation.
He criticised the alliance for its ongoing expansion into Eastern Europe and other regions, asserting that it consistently violates its own founding principles.
"NATO is simply an outright anachronism," Putin stated.
The Russian leader went on to argue that NATO primarily serves the interests of the US, allowing it to maintain global leadership. This leads to the alliance's efforts to instigate various conflicts around the world.
President Putin also claimed that the West aimed to sever ties between Russia and Europe, orchestrating a coup in Ukraine and triggering military actions in Donbas to achieve this.
In response, Russia initiated a "special military operation," and, as Putin put it, "one could say that the West got what it wanted." Earlier, Putin had stated that the world needs Russia.
