Senegalese journalist thanks Azerbaijan for supporting anti-slavery initiatives
Senegalese journalist and communications specialist Abdarahmane Wone thanked Azerbaijan for supporting international initiatives aimed at addressing historical injustice during the international conference "Media and Decolonisation: Raising Voices, Amplifying Narratives" in Baku.
Speaking at the conference, Wone expressed appreciation to the organisers for creating a platform where participants from different countries could discuss issues related to historical memory, human rights and the fair representation of peoples, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
He highlighted the significance of the United Nations' adoption on March 25, 2026, of a declaration against slavery and a document on reparations.
"This was a true victory for African peoples. We are deeply grateful to Azerbaijan, which was among the states that recognised slavery against Black peoples as a crime against humanity," Wone added.
The Senegalese journalist also said the conference was focused on rethinking the role of the media in shaping public perceptions.
"Decolonisation is not limited only to institutions or borders. It also concerns the spaces where knowledge is created and disseminated," the journalist stated.
