Slovak FM calls for global recognition of Palestinian independence

12 October 2024 16:00

Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár believes that the recognition of Palestinian independence is the only viable long-term solution to the Middle East conflict.

He emphasized the importance of the two-state model as the pathway to sustainable peace, stating, “The only long-term effective solution to the situation [in the Middle East] is the two-state model [for Israel and Palestine]”.

Speaking to Slovak media, he explained that Arab states would need to recognize Israel, while Palestine, in turn, would be granted full recognition, Caliber.Az reports.

Blanár reminded that Slovakia, as the successor state to Czechoslovakia, has officially recognized Palestinian sovereignty since 1988, following the original recognition by Czechoslovakia. He called on other nations that support a two-state solution to follow suit and recognize Palestinian statehood.

In September, U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, reiterated his support for a two-state solution, arguing that it remains the only path to lasting peace in the region.

Addressing escalating violence, including Israel's attacks on Lebanon and the dire situation in Gaza, Biden advocated for a cease-fire and a diplomatic resolution to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a full-scale war.

He emphasized the need for both sides to agree on a cease-fire and a hostage deal, which would "bring the hostages home and secure security for Israel," while also alleviating the suffering in Gaza.
