SOCAR Green: Azerbaijan on verge of unlocking major offshore wind resources
Energy officials have revealed that Azerbaijan has approximately 38 gigawatts (GW) of commercially viable offshore wind energy potential.
These figures were provided by the Director of Technology and Innovation at SOCAR Green, Elchin Targuluyev, as Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the 31st Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition in Baku, Targuluyev said offshore wind is expected to play a major role in the country’s medium- and long-term energy strategy.
“Offshore wind power represents a tremendous opportunity for Azerbaijan in both the medium and long term. The country ranks among the global leaders in offshore wind resources, with an estimated 157 GW of technical potential and around 38 GW of commercial potential,” the renewable energy specialist said.
Targuluyev also noted that Azerbaijan possesses significant potential in bioenergy and geothermal energy. However, these technologies are currently less commercially attractive and remain largely at the research and development stage.
“As a result, progress in these areas has been slower compared to solar and wind energy projects, which are attracting stronger market interest and investment,” he added.
