Speaker: Georgia to press Ukraine for answers following suspicious explosives plot in Tbilisi
Georgian authorities have vowed that they will demand answers from Ukraine’s leadership over their “unfriendly actions” once the ongoing military conflict in that country comes to an end.
This pledge was made by Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
His comments followed the detention of two Ukrainian truck drivers by Georgian law enforcement, who were found transporting 2.4 kg of the explosive substance hexogen. Investigators say the explosives were brought into Georgia from Ukraine via Romania, Bulgaria, and Türkiye.
According to the investigation, Ukraine’s Security Service allegedly handed the explosives to the driver while still on Ukrainian territory. In testimony, one of the drivers claimed the cargo was meant to be delivered to Russia, though Georgian authorities insist they have found no evidence to support that claim.
Instead, they suspect the men were planning to deliver the hexogen to the Avlabari district of Tbilisi, with its ultimate purpose still unclear at this moment.
“Time will come, this war will end, and of course, we will demand answers to our questions from the leadership of Ukraine about what they were doing. Is this their idea of brotherhood and friendship — to bring 2.5 kg of explosives into Tbilisi that could blow up an entire district?” Papuashvili angrily told reporters.
