Taliban demands compensation from West for Afghan suffering during military occupation
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban-led Afghan government, has called on Western countries to provide compensation for Afghans who endured suffering due to the actions of foreign military forces during the occupation of Afghanistan.
Mujahid stated that Western nations should compensate those Afghans who experienced brutality and crimes during the military occupation, emphasizing that the Taliban government is committed to ensuring the rights of affected individuals are protected, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
Mujahid also addressed ongoing investigations into war crimes committed by British forces, asserting that "all war crimes of the occupying countries were committed deliberately."
A public inquiry into alleged war crimes committed by British servicemen in Afghanistan between 2010 and 2013 commenced in the UK in 2023, following reports by the BBC of massacres involving dozens of victims. The inquiry aims to determine whether UK military and political leadership concealed extrajudicial executions in Afghanistan over a period of more than a decade.
The investigation will scrutinize the actions of British forces during the conflict, particularly in relation to accusations of unlawful killings, and seek to establish the extent of any potential cover-up by senior officials. The inquiry is seen as a crucial step in holding accountable those responsible for any breaches of international law during the UK's military presence in Afghanistan.
