Held at four rotating locations – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain – the festival marks a significant event in the Hindu calendar. Based on legend, it commemorates the churning of the ocean of milk, during which drops of the nectar of immortality fell at these sacred sites.
Devotees believe that bathing in the holy rivers during Kumbh Mela cleanses them of sins and brings spiritual renewal. The festival is celebrated with a vibrant display of cultural traditions, including prayers, meditation, and rituals.
Temporary accommodations and facilities are set up to manage the massive influx of pilgrims, making it a remarkable logistical feat. Kumbh Mela also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and communal harmony, attracting people from diverse backgrounds.
