Trump says his team makes “huge progress” toward ending Ukraine war
US President Donald Trump claimed that his team has made “huge progress” over the past week in efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated: “Over the past week, my team has made tremendous progress with respect to ending the War between Russia and Ukraine (A War that would have NEVER started if I were President!),” Caliber.Az reports.
He noted that 25,000 soldiers died in the conflict last month.
Trump added that the initial 28-point peace plan developed by the US has been refined with input from both sides, with only a few points of disagreement remaining.
“In the hopes of finalizing this Peace Plan, I have directed my Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with President Putin in Moscow and, at the same time, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will be meeting with the Ukrainians. I will be briefed on all progress made, along with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles,” he wrote.
Trump also expressed hope for a meeting with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, but only under one condition: that the peace plan is nearing completion. “I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages,” he concluded.
The US and Ukraine recently unveiled a “refined peace framework” after revising an earlier 28-point proposal, a shift they say brings their positions closer together and reflects more respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Talks in Geneva reportedly produced substantial changes to the original plan, reducing the number of points and revising or dropping controversial demands that had been criticised as overly favourable to Russia (e.g., full territorial concessions, strict military reductions).
As part of renewed diplomacy, Dan Driscoll (US Secretary of the Army) held meetings in Abu Dhabi with Russian officials to present and negotiate the updated peace proposal, while Steve Witkoff — a US special envoy — was reportedly slated to meet Russia’s leadership in Moscow.
Despite optimism from US and Ukrainian officials, major topics, such as guarantees for Ukraine’s security, the fate of occupied territories, and the scope of Russia’s demands, remain unresolved and contentious.
