Trump targets India with 25% tariff over Russian energy ties
US President Donald Trump has publicly shared his intention of implementing a 25% tariff rate on India despite ongoing negotiations over a trade agreement.
Among the reasons influencing this decision, he cited the fact that India is one of the largest buyers of Russian energy resources.
He announced this decision via his Truth Social platform on July 30, Caliber.Az reports.
In his social media statement, Trump argued that the US has engaged in little business with India over the years because of the latter's high tariffs imposed on US goods, going so far as to call them "among the highest in the world."
"Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!" Trump shared.
Driven by his accusation of India for working with Russia, Trump further stated that India will be facing an additional penalty fee for imports.
